Community spirit at PICAL with Christmas in July gift packs

2 min read

THERE’S a little extra warmth at the Phillip Island Community and Adult Learning Centre (PICAL) this winter, thanks to the generosity of local families and the big-hearted students at Newhaven College.

More than 100 gift packs have been donated by the school’s year five and six students, each filled with small, thoughtful items - everything from toiletries to treats - put together with extra shopping done by their families. Each pack also includes a handwritten message from the student or family who made it, offering encouragement, kindness or just a cheerful note to brighten someone’s day.

It was all part of a Social and Emotional (SEL) Program around empathy, kindness and community. And now, these beautifully made packs are finding their way to others in the community through PICAL.

“This is what PICAL is all about,” said David Rooks, Centre Manager. “We're a community centre that exists because of the people around us. Everything we do is possible because people care - and this is a perfect example of that in action.”

From Monday, July 21, to Friday, July 25, anyone who drops into PICAL can home a gift pack from the tables set up in the foyer. No catch - just a small act of kindness to remind people that they’re seen, appreciated and part of a community that looks out for one another.

The messages inside each gift pack were especially touching. Some simple, like “Hi, I hope you have a great day.” “You are brave, strong and happy.” Others are more playful, “Live your life freely and care less.”

The idea to turn this into a “Christmas in July” event came from a conversation at PICAL between staff and volunteers, who saw the opportunity to spread some joy during the colder months. While the school and teacher behind the donation weren’t looking for any publicity, PICAL is proud to be the bridge that connects this gesture of kindness to the wider community.

“When the community works together, great things happen. This is just one of those lovely reminders that we’re all connected,” David added.

Middle School Teacher, Donna Driscoll, is proud of the SEL Program for years five and six, “The generosity of the year five and six families and the care each student put into creating each individual gift package was truly heartwarming and a testament to the strength of our school community. Acts like these not only bring comfort to those receiving the gifts but also instill a lasting sense of empathy and connection in the students who prepared them.”

PICAL would like to thank every student, parent and teacher involved - and every person who supports the centre all year round.
