SJ Higgins Group has been appointed to build the Phillip Island Community Hospital and major construction will begin in the coming weeks.
The project is expected to be completed in late 2024.
State Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale joined with Bass Coast Health CEO Jan Child for the sod turn to break ground marking the official start on this project.
The facility will provide a range of integrated community-based health and outpatient care services including an expanded urgent care service for minor, non-emergency medical issues, day surgery, dialysis, chemotherapy and public dental.
It will also have family and crisis support services, mental health, diagnostic and specialist appointments.
It will help ease pressure off nearby neighbouring hospitals including Wonthaggi Hospital - allowing them to focus on critical care and acute health issues, emergency care and more complex surgeries and procedures.
The project is being delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority and will be operated by Bass Coast Health.
The shovel used for the sod turn has been painted by local First Nations artist Steve Ulula Parker – a descendent of the Boonwurrung, Yorta Yorta and Erub people.
