LYRIC Theatre Backstage Manager Pete Clarkson has been awarded a two-year scholarship by the Martin Carlson Foundation to undertake a Certificate IV in Apparel and Fashion at Holmesglen Institute of TAFE.
Pete’s theatre experience began in Leongatha with the Lyric Theatre production of Kinky Boots as an ensemble member. Pete has since worked backstage with the set crews of both the Leongatha and Wonthaggi theatre companies.
In 2025 Pete broadened his work with Lyric by joining the committee and wardrobe team enjoying every aspect of working backstage and behind the scenes for the acclaimed Lyric Theatre production of Footloose. Pete has now commenced his full-time studies.
Lyric Theatre President Bron Beach said Pete had also commenced a wonderful project for the Lyric Wardrobe cataloguing Lyric Theatre’s costumes on an app so the theatre group could set up a formal hire process to provide another small income stream.
“We have an incredible resource sitting there but have not had the time to develop this project until Pete offered,” said Bron.
“Lyric Theatre is grateful for the continued support of the Martin Carlson Foundation.”
Working backstage on most shows Pete was described as a hard-working volunteer.
Trustees Gary Brittle, Darren Polglaise and Dennis Halloran said that the Korumburra based Foundation was increasing its initiatives within the South Gippsland region and recognised the scholarship for Pete Clarkson as another fantastic opportunity to support the local area, its youth and community organisations.
“The Lyric Theatre is vital for local communities and young people, encouraging confidence and providing opportunities for all,” said Gary.
The Martin Carlson Foundation also recognised the incredible hard work of Lyric Theatre President Bron Beach and what the volunteers do, to make the shows and events happen, bringing together local residents and local communities.
