NEW and returning pairs of hooded plovers have been sighted nesting on South Gippsland and Bass Coast beaches.
Although the forces of nature have taken their toll on some parts of the coastline pairs of hooded plovers have been seen starting to nest a little higher up in the dunes to adapt to the rising tides.
According to Friends of the Hooded Plovers Bass Coast and South Gippsland small groups of hooded plovers have been found on local back beaches along with sooty oystercatchers hidden below the sand rocky ledge.
Friends of the Hooded Plovers have two workshops coming up on the Bass Coast, at Wonthaggi on Sunday November 16 and Kilcunda on Sunday December14. Both workshops are open to the public and new volunteers are always welcome.
Bass Coast and South Gippsland Friends of the Hooded Plovers is a group of devoted volunteers who monitor breeding hooded plovers along the mainland coastline on Victoria's Bass/Bunurong Coast from San Remo to Inverloch, and South Gippsland from Point Smythe to Corner Inlet.
