NEWHAVEN College's Youth Parliament Team made a remarkable impact during their participation in the Victorian Youth Parliament, held at the Legislative Council (Upper House of the Victorian Parliament). The team displayed exceptional preparation, articulation and debating skills throughout the sessions.
Newhaven College presented their Criminalising Coercive Control as a Stand-Alone Offence Bill 2024 during the Youth Parliament sitting days on Monday 1, Tuesday 2 and Thursday 4 July. Discussion around the Bill was highly emotional, with some participants sharing their own experiences. The team's dedication and hard work led to the bill being passed unanimously, highlighting the significance of this issue.
The College Youth Parliament Team, consisting of Miranda Zalunardo, Keegan Hughes, Gabriel Winterson and Gabriel Di Falco displayed exceptional leadership and teamwork. Notably, Gabriel Di Falco was elected as Chamber Leader, a remarkable honour bestowed by his peers.
Gabriel Di Falco said of the experience, "It was a very special experience from the start. From meeting so many like-minded people, to the surreal experience of walking into Parliament House for the first time, it will be a week that I will never forget. This program has inspired me to continue to seek opportunities in the political space. I am excited to see what I, along with the other participants, can achieve in the future."
