Rare maritime traineeship opportunity with Wanderer Adventures, Tidal River

WANDERER Adventures – Wilsons Promontory Cruises is offering a traineeship position for one lucky youngster looking to make a career in the maritime industry.

The two-year fully paid Trainee Maritime, general purpose hand/coxswain position has just been advertised and will be based at Tidal River.

CEO Matt McDonald says the team is looking to recruit as soon as possible and the successful applicant will receive a General Purpose Hand Near Coastal and Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal

Certificate. Mr McDonald says the role is suitable for school leavers and the successful applicant must have their own car and license. Transport is provided from Yanakie.

“You’ll be working alongside experienced seafarers as you undertake comprehensive hands-on training while gaining national accredited certificates,” he said.

“Never a dull moment in the role, the position reports to the Operations Manager. It will see you grow and develop your career both at Wanderer Adventures and in the broader Searoad Ferries Group.”

Searoad Ferries recently acquired Wanderer Adventures and operates a number of maritime and tourism experiences including the Queenscliff to Sorrento car and passenger ferry, moving over 950,000 passengers annually, the Western Port Ferries passenger service between Stony Point, French Island and Phillip Island, Naturaliste Tours on French Island and Explore Australia day tours which operate from Melbourne.

Designed for the intrepid traveller, Wanderer Adventures – Wilsons Promontory Cruises offers unique and immersive experiences.

Each day the tour departs Tidal River on a 2.5 hour-long cruise which departs from Norman Beach at Tidal River. This iconic tour passes the southernmost tip of mainland Australia and explores the waters of Victoria’s first marine national park.

A tour highlight is seeing the granite monolith of Skull Rock which has been sculpted by wind and waves and is surrounded by crystal blue waters.

Visitors get up close and personal with an Australian fur seal colony, observe local birdlife, including the majestic white bellied sea eagle and regularly see dolphins and migrating whales. Day to day as a trainee with Wanderer Adventurers, you can expect to:

• learn the skills of a general-purpose hand

• be mentored and work alongside experienced mariners

• ensure vessels are clean and ship shape for travel

• assist with mechanical issues

• interact and help customers both onshore and onboard

• provide traffic control of public areas.
