IT MIGHT have been cold and stormy outside last Saturday night but the 40th anniversary Korumburra Debutant Ball went off without a hitch inside the sumptuously decorated Korumburra Recreation Centre.
Hardly had the last game of basketball been played on Court One on Friday night than a team of volunteers, from the Korumburra Secondary College’s Community Engagement Group hit the floor, as the perfect conclusion to National Volunteers Week.
They had the impressive centrepiece, stage decorations, tables, chairs, and fairy lights down both sides of the gymnasium up in a flash and all was in readiness for the presentation of the debs on Saturday.
One of the organisers, Matt Row, acknowledged there was some trepidation behind the curtain, with the centre packed with more than 500 supporters. But the presentation of the 18 debs, to special guests John Wilson acting principal of the Korumburra Secondary College and Shelley Snooks, daughter of the late debutant stalwarts John and Norrie Little, complete with practiced bows and the traditional curtsies were all text book.
There was just time for a few photos of the assembled groups and then it was on with the dance sets; first the time-honoured Charmaine to the strains of ‘You’re Just Too Good to be True’, followed by a tango, jive and a dance with parents and special guests of the debs and their partners.
Once the formalities were over, there was a noticeable relaxation in the mood and it was on with a great night of dancing and fun.
Another of the organisers from the KCS Community Engagement Group, Sam Norrey was delighted with the success of the night.
“You hope it goes off well and I think it was a great night,” said Sam.
“Such a lot of people have been involved in this over the 40 years and we tried to acknowledge that tonight by having Shelley along as a special guest and also with great grand daughter of John and Norrie Little joining Harper White and Kye Whiteside as our flowergirls and pageboy.
“We also had their grand daughter Jaime Little in the deb set.”
Among those making their debut were: Siena Lane and Jake Churchill, Jacqu[line Turton and Noah Furness, Eva Barrett and Thomas Nicholas, Ella Cuman and Blake Hill, Kirrah Belvedere and Coby Fowles, Tyla Gollop and Tarkyn Walker, Amber Walker and Raph Jefferis, Lillyca White and Jack Donohue, Jemayar Grabham and Xavier Lindsay, Ava Lord and Kynan Dunstan, Ruby Cannizzo and Hayden Bowler, Anissa Condoluci and Charlie Shaddock, Alicia McGrath and Zac Grabham, Jaime Little and Max Donohue, Tiarna Blackwood and Ben Fort, Chloe Jones and Thomas Sherar, Michael Champion and Kelsey Kruger and Fernanda Hurst and Obssa Nicholas.
