The Mobile ADF Careers Centre (MACC) in Wonthaggi

FOR the next two weeks, the Mobile ADF Careers Centre (MACC) will be travelling from Warragul, Traralgon, Sale and Wonthaggi.

The MACC provides the opportunity for those interested in a career in the ADF to meet with career specialists and discover the variety of roles available in the Navy, Army and Air Force.

The ADF offers a rich blend of career and lifestyle opportunities, subsidised housing and medical support, rewarding, well-paid work, memorable experiences, world-class training and job security.

In attendance at the MACC was LEUT Jonty Paterson, an engineering officer in the Australian Navy. Specifically, Jonty graduated with a Bachelor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the University of Adelaide in 2020. He mentioned being employed directly as a mechanical engineering officer and has progressed to the rank of Lieutenant.

Jonty’s early career involved basic training at HMAS Albatross in Jervis Bay, followed by training at HMAS Cerberus, and then posting to a frigate where he helped recommission the ship.

Jonty is currently working at a Career Centre as a recruiter, which he described as a short posting. His advice for potential recruits is refreshingly honest. “It’s worth giving it a go. We’re getting a whole bunch of new equipment – new ships and submarines. It’s an exciting time to be part of something bigger than yourself,” said Jonty.

“Being away from family can be challenging, but the ADF provides incredible support. For those with young families. The ADF has relocation assistance, reunion travel and financial allowances that recognise the personal sacrifices military personnel make.”

Jonty’s career is one of personal growth. “I can already see where my career is going in the future, and I’m following that path. There is always room for growth,” said Jonty.

The recruitment process includes an initial online application, and no specific job role needs to be selected initially. “At these career events, we are targeting those 18 to 25 years,” said Jonty.

Applicants will then take an aptitude test, which is a cognitive ability assessment. This test determines potential job opportunities, as different roles require different cognitive ability levels. “Practice test can be found online.”

Potential recruits will then go through career coaching, gaining an understanding of financial support, accommodation, and financial benefits.

“There are many financial benefits with the ADF, including mortgage subsidies.

“The process typically takes six to eight months from application to enlistment, with support throughout the journey. Give it a go. Attend the MACC events and talk with a career specialist to see where the future can take you.”
