DUST in summer and poor drainage in winter in Sunderland Bay is something everyone can agree on but there seems little consensus about how to fix it.
Faced with the prospect of a special charge scheme costing between $11,938 and $28,897 property owners on The Esplanade between Sunderland Bay Road to Zephyr Court must now consider a range of options.
“It is never a good idea to seal roads said visiting Birmingham Lion’s fan Steve Johnson.
“Unsealed roads need to be properly maintained.”
Walking their dog Molly at Sunderland Bay Laura and Duane said local residents don’t want to be up for the cost of road and drainage works.
“Unsealed roads keep the traffic down,” said Duane.
Laura said she felt sorry for those living on the corner who had to pay the most.
Josh said he understood that for property owners on The Esplanade dust was an issue.
“It gets a lot of tourist traffic,” he said.
“For local residents the fact that it will cost a lot is a bit stiff.
“It’s a lot of cash for local residents not sure how the road should be sealed.
“Not enough consultation and as little input as possible.”
Council should go into a longer consultation process said Josh.
“No one size fits all.”
James and his son Eli agreed that the drainage and dust are terrible.
Visitors Alex and Emilio thought it was a good idea to seal the road particularly in summer because of the dust but it should be the government that pays.
“It’s a tourist road,” they said.
Jessica and Iain said they really loved the old beach idea but agreed the dust in summer was terrible and the drainage didn’t work properly.
“I love the rustic feel,” said Jessica.
“It feels authentic.”
“It hasn’t changed since the 70’s,” said Iain.
Jessica and Iain said the proposed road and drainage works would come at a substantial cost to local property owners.
