THE Bass Coast Shire Council has advised, at about 9.30pm on Wednesday night January 10, 2024 that the new Rhyll Boat Ramp will be closed until further notice after a car became totally submerged about 20 metres in front of the end of the boat ramp.
The circumstances around the mishap are not known but can only have been the result of trying to launch or retrieve a boat.
However it has been claimed that the slippery boat ramp was at fault not the driver of the car
The following has been posted on Facebook:
“They were retrieving the boat and because it’s so slippery the car just started sliding the hand brake and brakes were on and everything it was just too slippery “
It is expected that salvage contractors will be at the boat ramp early on Thursday morning.
For the time being however, the boat ramp is closed.
Here are the details posted by the Bass Coast Shire Counci:
“Rhyll Boat Ramp has been closed this evening (Wednesday January 10) until further notice. A vehicle is submerged at the ramp. Once we have confirmed recovery and ensure the area is clear and safe, we will reopen the ramp. Please avoid the area for now."
