A BEAUTIFUL 21 degrees outside, and the Leongatha and District Cricket Association couldn’t have asked for a better day weather-wise for the first match of the season. Although a dry week in the buildup would have certainly helped the grounds dry out across the region and allowed B and C grades to also play, in comparison to years past when the start of the season has been delayed, in Victoria, you take what you can get.
And the A grade teams were certainly making use of the sunshine.
At Wonthaggi this afternoon, OMK were chasing down Club’s 186. At the time of writing, Ethan was unbeaten on 57*. Club won the toss at noon and elected to bat first with Ryan Thomas and Fraser West posting 55 and 41 respectively.
OMK team manager Geoff Wyatt described the day as magical, whilst Trevor and Clayton were happily recording the scores in the sunshine.
For team captain Koby Brann, the focus for the afternoon was to get the runs in, noting the ground was “wet and slow” when they fielded earlier in the day.
“We’ve been really solid at training and had good numbers.”
Down the road at Dalyston, A2 Glen Alvie captain Ben McRae was glad to be back.
“It’s good to be back, and we got a good day,” he exclaimed, as he watched from the score desk in the first innings.
“The field is really good, if we’d been at other grounds we might not have got on, so really happy.”
McRae adding that they were eager to notch up their first win.
“We’ve got everyone into match fitness, and it would be great to get the win whilst we are at it.”
At the time of writing, Glen Alvie had finished their innings 10/130, with Koonwarra L/RSL at 3/79 in reply, James Rushton and Callum Buckland at the crease.
Elsewhere, Kilcunda Bass were chasing down Meeniyan Dumbalk United (4/71 to 7/190) at Bass Rec Reserve in A2. Nyora and Foster, last year’s second and fifth-placed sides, were scheduled at Poowong, but the ground was empty (update to follow).
In A1, Nerrena had overtaken Phillip Island (10/98 to 1/102) at the Velodrome, while Inverloch were eyeing off Imperials’ 88, sitting at 3/55 at East Campus.
