THE South Gippsland Open Gardens Association is inviting expressions of interest for the 2023 event this November; the annual occasion invites primary school students to register their art as part of the inaugural portrait prize - similar to the renowned Archibald prize, as well as residents to open their gardens to the community.

The annual event will be held on Saturday, November 18 and Sunday, November 19 from 10am until 4pm, with founder Andrew Bowen opening his home in Leongatha to artists willing to showcase their work.

Winners of the portrait prize will be announced at the Foster Show on Saturday, February 24, 2024.

The invite is open to all primary schools in South Gippsland with the intention to allow young artists to display their art and showcase their talent.

“We’re calling upon local schools to get the children involved. Their work will be on display at my open garden in Leongatha alongside numerous local artists,”  said Andrew.

The artists on display include:

Margaret Balfe - baskets made from plant fibres

Jenny Gray - whimsical ceramics for the garden

Charlie Baillie - sculptural forms in wood

Sandra Hartley - pencil and ink drawings of birds and plants

Meg Viney - felted sculptures and pine needle baskets

Andrew encourages Prep to grade six students to write down what inspired their piece. A gold cold donation is required for submission with proceeds donated to their chosen charity.

The South Gippsland Open Gardens Association is fundraising for Leongatha and Manna Gum Community Houses and invites residents from Loch to Foster and all parts in between to include their gardens in the 2023 event.
