Gippsland-raised lawyer to carry Labor flag in Gippsland South

LABOR has named Gippsland local Amy Barry-Macaulay as its candidate for Gippsland South at the November 28 state election.

Ms Barry-Macaulay was raised in Gippsland as the daughter of farmers and small business owners.

She moved to Melbourne to study law and began her career as a corporate lawyer, later working as a community lawyer assisting people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage.

Over the past two decades she has held leadership roles across the legal, health and human services, environment, education and training sectors.

She has since returned to the Gippsland coast with her partner and their two daughters.

“I grew up in Gippsland, as did my parents before me, and I’m proud to be back living in regional Victoria with my family,” Ms Barry-Macaulay said.

“I really think Gippsland is the best part of our country – we have great people, beautiful countryside and strong connected communities.”

“I’ve had a diverse professional career, across law, not-for-profits and government. I am keen to use my strong skills and expertise, and my first-hand knowledge of how government works, to achieve great outcomes for the Gippsland South community.”

Ms Barry-Macaulay pointed to the State Government’s delivery of 121 new schools and Free TAFE as reasons she was standing for Labor.

“I understand that regional Victoria faces unique challenges, but I also see the strength of our communities and the many opportunities that there are to grow,” she said.

She said her campaign would focus on listening to communities across Gippsland South and advocating for improved services and investment.

“I love Gippsland, and I am passionate about making a difference in my community – I can’t wait to get out and meet with people and hear how we can work together to create positive change for our region.”

Gippsland South is held by State Nationals leader Danny O’Brien.
