WARRANT Officer Joshua Woo is the first to admit his focus wasn’t on a career, training or even getting a job when he was a young bloke, living in Redcliffe on the edge Morton Bay in sunny Queensland.
It was all about cars, girls and having a good time.
“Yeah, as a kid I couldn’t see a pathway for me, plus I didn’t have the confidence to go out and select a career,” said Josh.
“So, I just went and joined the infantry,” he said.
Years later, after doing all the training to be a soldier and serving in various locations overseas, he was thinking about moving on.
“I was going to get out and do something else, but they encouraged me to try something different. They said you’ve done all the training, you know how it works, what about a trade?”
Josh trained as an electrician, not just any electrician, but someone who could adapt his skills to any situation whether it be in conflict, in temporary support, or working in humanitarian placements overseas.
The experiences he has gathered makes him something of an expert when it comes to taking about Australian Defence Force careers, especially when someone like himself presents, not really knowing what they are looking for in a future career.
Josh and his colleague, Corporal Maddison Koschel, a logistics commander in the ADF, were on hand at the Bass Coast Local Jobs and Careers Expo on Friday this week, not so much to get people to enlist as much as provide information about the incredible array of stills training, study and careers available through the ADF.
“Yes, for sure, everyone has got to do basic (military) training, but we’ve pretty much got to function as an autonomous organisation, one that is able to provide all services from within including all the trades, education, health, logistics, management you name it,” said Cpl Koschel.
“It’s not all about driving tanks and the infantry,” she said.
“So, we’re here talking about the pathways available for people in the ADF.”
Friday’s jobs and careers expo was the second in a series facilitated by the Bass Coast Shire Council with a wide array of training, study and career options, many of them locally, and with plenty of support services like the Gippsland Jobs Hub, co-located with TAFE Gippsland in Leongatha, Morwell, Traralgon and other major locations in Gippsland, and Mission Australia with a special role helping parents get back to training, study or work after helping the kids on the way to kinder and school.
