Memories of a life in Bass Coast

I AM writing as a sentimental, lively 94-year-old man who has very happy memories of life in and around Wonthaggi and Phillip Island.

My three sons also have memories having married a Miss Phillip Island in a National Beauty Contest. The island was the place to live. We had a house built in French Court.

It was not long before I realised painting small poster water colour pictures on the island became “boring”, so my wife decided to move to the mainland, Glen Alvie was our destination.

With one hundred acres and three hundred Angora goats, we weren’t to know Angora goats suffer from foot rot, so that was disappointing, and I had to find other work due to the wet conditions.

The textile mill in Wonthaggi was a gift for all looking for work, and entertaining was another, so I joined Breenies Musical Company and made some money, and lived happily.

Also remember two very large sharks who roamed the Island and were known to local fishermen. The children who jumped into the water from the wharf never jumped again as I showed them the jaws of a shark caught off the wharf. One idiot came down and caught the two huge sharks, end of story.
