SMALL business owners across Gippsland are being hit hard by crime. I’ve heard from shopkeepers who are tired, frustrated and scared. Their livelihoods are at risk. So too is the safety of their staff and customers.
According to the latest figures from the Crime Statistics Agency, retail crime across the Wellington, South Gippsland and Latrobe local government areas increased by more than 35 per cent when compared with the previous 12 months.
These are not just statistics. Each one represents a break-in, a theft or other criminal act that causes stress and financial loss to real people.
Crime like this takes a toll. It drives up costs, puts pressure on workers and makes people feel unsafe in their own towns.
The Allan Labor Government needs to do more. Retailers deserve better protection. Police need more resources and we need a government that takes crime seriously.
Our small businesses are the heart of our local economy. They support jobs, sponsor our sports clubs and bring life to our streets. They deserve to feel safe.
It is clear that the Allan Labor Government can’t manage crime and it is our local retailers who are paying the price.
