Threat to Bass River platypus

1 min read

A 24-YEAR-OLD platypus found in Monbulk Creek is the oldest so far discovered in the wild.

It was found in a survey conducted for Melbourne Water by scientists from Ecology Australia.

The age is not known of some of the platypus in the Bass River, but various groupings have been seen in the river at Grantville and Glen Forbes. The Grantville platypus as well as River Blackfish are currently threatened by vegetation destruction orders from Bass Coast Shire which the Council claims is for fire control.

To comply with the instructions, vegetation on land adjoining Freeranger Eggs in Stanley Road has been bulldozed into the river.
