New accommodation bridges Wonthaggi rental gap

A purpose-built accommodation complex has been unveiled in central Wonthaggi, offering furnished private rooms for people seeking an alternative to a more conventional long-term rental.

ColCoast, at 187 Graham Street, has nine rooms and can accommodate up to 12 residents, with several rooms suitable for couples.

The property is classed as “prescribed accommodation”, with residents renting private rooms while having access to shared facilities as well.

Alex Scott Real Estate property manager Shaun Silver said the project was intended to fill a gap for those who needed somewhere to live for several months rather than a traditional residential lease.

“There’s always been a need for something like this, and it’s just become more prominent lately,” Mr Silver said.

“People between rentals, people that are building a house, for instance, so they need something for six months.

“The residential tenancies are generally longer term, whereas this sort of bridges that gap for those people.”

Mr Silver said much of the early interest had come from people building homes, residents aged over 50 and tradespeople working temporarily in the district.

Hospital workers, paramedic students and others completing placements in Wonthaggi could also make use of the accommodation.

There are no special eligibility requirements. Prospective residents can apply online through the property listing in much the same way they would for any other rental.

Each room is furnished and has its own sleeping area, ensuite, kitchenette and living space, along with heating and cooling and a private outdoor courtyard.

One room has been designed for people with disabilities, and has more open space, grab rails and other accessible features.

Rent is $375 per week and includes utilities, although residents must arrange and pay for their own internet service if they wish to have it.

Residents also have access to the larger communal kitchen and dining area, laundry and shared indoor and outdoor spaces.

But using those areas is optional.

“They’ve got their own fridge, their own microwave, so they’ve got their own space to cook in already,” Mr Silver said.

“If they want to sit down with neighbours, or if they have a friend over and they want to have a coffee in a space that isn’t their room, they can do it out there.”

House rules and residents’ rights and responsibilities will be displayed in each room, while the owner is responsible for regularly cleaning and maintaining the shared areas.

The property held an open day on Friday, August 28, allowing anyone in the community to come and have a look and inspect the rooms.

Alex Scott property manager Kate Reda said the event attracted a steady flow of visitors.

“We felt the day was a real success, with a steady stream of curious people coming through to have a look and learn more about this style of accommodation,” she said.
