DALYSTON Football Netball Club is in line for a new scoreboard and solar-powered clubrooms under a Labor election commitment.

Labor has pledged up to $120,000 towards replacing the scoreboard and converting the clubrooms to solar at Dalyston Recreation Reserve, home of the Magpies, if it is re-elected at the November 28 state election.

Labor said local clubs were about more than just the game, and the upgrades would help people of all ages and abilities get involved in community sport, with clubs providing a place where members, supporters and volunteers come together.

“Labor knows local clubs are the lifeblood of regional communities – and this funding backs them in,” Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence said.

Labor’s candidate for Bass Chris Buckingham credited the club’s committee and AFL Gippsland for their advocacy.

“I want to acknowledge the advocacy efforts of the Dalyston Football and Netball Club committee and AFL Gippsland in helping to deliver this result,” Mr Buckingham said.

“Labor understands the role local sporting clubs play in their community. They bring people together, encourage healthy lifestyles and generate community pride.”

This season the Magpies fielded junior football sides from under-10s to under-18s, girls’ football teams and a veterans side alongside their netball squads.

The club also offers Net Set Go netball for children aged five to 10.

Mitch Hallahan coaches the senior footballers and Jenny McRae the A Grade netballers.

Mr Buckingham is running for Labor in Bass after sitting MP Jordan Crugnale decided not to recontest the seat, which Labor held by 202 votes at the 2022 election to make it the state’s most marginal.

He faces a field including Liberal candidate and former Bass Coast mayor Rochelle Halstead and One Nation’s Nikole Schellekens.
