$5.3 million in the budget for San Remo Primary School

THE San Remo Primary School has received its long-awaited school modernisation and upgrade funding of $5.3 million in the State Budget handed down in State Parliament on Tuesday afternoon, May 20, 2025.

Bass MP Jordan Crugnale has warmly welcomed the announcement.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to share some amazing news for our Bass communities!,” Ms Crugnale said on Facebook on Tuesday afternoon.

“This year’s State Budget is focused on what really matters, supporting families, easing cost of living pressures, and investing in our future.

“San Remo Primary School will receive $5.3 million to replace old portables with brand new, permanent classrooms.”

Details of the San Remo Primary School project funding is as follows:

  • San Remo Primary School (modernisation/upgrade school facilities) total expenditure $5.3 million, estimated expenditure by June 30, 2025 $226,000, expenditure in 2025-26 $1.711M, remaining expenditure $3.363M. Estimated completion date 2026-27.

Ms Crugnale also said there was more good news for the Bass Electorate including that the Koo Wee Rup Netball Club will receive $275,000 towards their courts' redevelopment.

Ms Crugnale went on to say that there is also $50.4 million to upgrade the Phillip Island Bridge, that the Phillip Island Community Hospital would be open and operating soon, that the government was expanding pharmacy care, with new treatments available directly from pharmacists without the need for a GP visit and from January 2026, public transport will be free for all kids under 18, potentially saving families up to $775 per child, every year.

Ms Crugnale said the government was delivering 65,000 more Get Active Kids vouchers worth up to $200 to help with uniforms, fees and equipment and boosting the Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund to $400 for eligible families.

There are more rebates for solar hot water and heat pumps, saving up to $400 a year on power bills with a $100 Power Saving Bonus for concession card holders.

Thirty-five schools across Victoria will receive funding for upgrades to improve educational outcomes and to provide high-quality classrooms and facilities for learning and community use. This includes the third and final package of school upgrades under the Government’s election commitment, ‘Delivering great local schools’ as published in Labor’s Financial Statement 2022 (LFS) including funding for:

  • Drouin Secondary College $ 11.7 million
  • Leongatha Secondary College $11.7 million
  • Wonthaggi Primary School 2023-24 total $6.7 million, expenditure to June 30, 2025, $456,000, estimated expenditure 2025-26 $4.868 million, expenditure remaining $1.376 million, expected completion in 2nd quarter 2026-27.

The budget also contains reference to the ‘Hospital Infrastructure Delivery Fund’ of $102.563 million including the Wonthaggi Hospital redevelopment, $13.019M of which is expected to be spent by June 30, 2025 with a further $83.982M to be spent in 2025-26 and $5.562M remaining to be spent. Completion is expected in the 2nd quarter of 2026-27.

As well as works at Wonthaggi, the funding has been addressed to the new hospital for West Gippsland, a new Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Melbourne’s East, the Dandenong Hospital and Wonthaggi Hospital redevelopment.
