February start for Inverloch dune reconstruction

2 min read

DUNE reconstruction at Inverloch Surf Beach will begin in February 2026, allowing locals and holiday-makers access to the beach during the peak summer tourism season.

The Victorian Government has engaged Hall Contracting to deliver dredging and dune reconstruction works.

The works include:

  • Dredging of sand from Anderson Inlet
  • Dune reconstruction and beach renourishment works near the Inverloch Surf Lifesaving Club
  • Dune revegetation works

To achieve the full scope of works, the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) successfully sought additional State Government funding. A Coastal Estuarine and Risk Management grant from the Commonwealth has also supported project delivery.

Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale said this is a major first step forward.

“The additional $2 million funding from our government towards this major engineering project, in addition to what we have already invested, is a testament to how much we all value this stretch of coastline and all who enjoy it.

I encourage residents to take part in DEECA’s upcoming online information and Q&A session about the dune reconstruction and beach nourishment project.”

The original aim was to begin work in Spring for completion prior to Christmas, but contractor availability and the summer peak tourism period required a rescheduled start date.

Bass Coast Shire Council is working to obtain permits and approvals for the $700,000 extension and remediation of the geotextile sand-bag wall at the Inverloch Surf Life Saving Club, with procurement processes commencing shortly. Funded as part of the $15million statewide package announced by the Allan Labor Government earlier this year, which also included immediate works at Silverleaves on Phillip Island. State Government departments will continue to monitor and assess conditions at Wreck Creek to inform future interventions.

DEECA and other Government agencies have already invested around $1.7 million in on-ground coastal protection works at Inverloch, with another $5.3 million committed to the next stage of the project.

DEECA are also holding an online information session about the upcoming dune reconstruction and beach nourishment on Thursday, October 16 from 4 pm to 6 pm online via Microsoft Teams. The contractor will present an overview of the works, followed by a Q&A.
