THE first sod of earth has been turned to mark the start of construction of new hotel-style accommodation for health workers at the Wonthaggi Hospital.
Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale MP said the new accommodation will make it easier for healthcare workers to live and work where they’re needed most.
The new two-storey development will comprise 20 self-contained rooms for healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses, medical specialists and allied healthcare staff funded through the State Government’s Regional Worker Accommodation Fund.
“The project is the first health worker initiative to be approved through the State Government’s Development Facilitation Program and will play a critical role in attracting and retaining more skilled healthcare workers,” said Ms Crugnale.
Minister for Regional Development Jaclyn Symes said the Allen Labor Government’s Regional Worker Accommodation fund is supporting skilled workers in regional areas.
“Fast-tracking worker accommodation for health professionals in Wonthaggi means more doctors, nurses, and allied health workers can live close to where they’re needed most,” said Minister Kilkenny.
Jordan Crugnale said making sure health workers have a place to stay near the hospital just makes sense, it’s good for them, good for patients, and good for Wonthaggi.
The sod turning event to mark the start of construction began with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony by Bunurong Elder Robert Ogden attended by Aunty Dr Doseena Fergie OAM, Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale MP, Bass Coast Mayor Cr Rochelle Halstead, Bass Coast CEO Greg Box, Ian Thompson (Chair Bass Coast Health) Sam Issa (MD Izza Group) and representatives of Bass Coast Health, Bass Coast Shire and contractors Izza Group.
