HEY, don’t get us wrong. After decades of fatalities on the ‘Black Spur’ section of the South Gippsland Highway, the community is overwhelmingly appreciative of the $115.2 million that has been spent to realign the highway at that location.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
But, and we’re probably getting a bit picky now, we’ve had some feedback from road users, of the Leongatha and Meeniyan part of the new-look South Gippsland Highway that the old road lines haven’t been blacked out properly.
And they say there is a deal of confusion about which way you go at certain points – not ideal.
“I watched a woman drive down the middle of the road today, unsure what lines to be followed,” said a Sentinel-Times’ reader on social media.
“It’s like this all over the roadworks. I thought they were supposed to black them out if they are no longer in use.
“The traffic management for these roadworks is horrible at the moment.
“You could get a great photo of all the different lines on the other side of the bridge coming from Leongatha.”
It’s fair comment and the Sentinel-Times has passed it on to Regional Roads Victoria for comment.
In the meantime, could someone in authority get down there with a tin of black paint and a paintbrush or roller and give the lines a bit of a touch up?
There has also been some comment that the seal on the new road surface must be thin because potholes are already starting to appear on new sections of the road.
That’s an example of how hard South Gippsland’s weather and heavy traffic is on our roads and why local shire councillors have always said that the cost of road maintenance in the South Gippsland area is always, always higher than it is in central Victorian areas and in the state’s north.
