Meritorious Medal presented to Vietnam hero

1 min read

IT WAS an extra special ANZAC Day last Tuesday as Mike Shields was presented with his Meritorious Medal.

A life member of Wonthaggi RSL sub-branch, the award was well overdue in President Dan Lucas’ eyes with Mike well deserving.

“The Meritorious Medal is the RSL’s highest award to a veteran that has given so much time and effort to the RSL and the community and can only be given to a veteran who has been awarded a life membership,” Wonthaggi President, Mr Lucas explained.

“In the time I have known Mike he has been a great mentor to me and always been there to guide me in the running of the Wonthaggi RSL.

“He is always available for every appeal and is out selling poppies and ANZAC badges.”

Mr Lucas explained how Mike has been a role model in the RSL and someone he has always looked up to.

“He is a Vietnam veteran and during his time in service one of his many roles was serving in the 2nd Cavalry Regiment. He only missed meeting my father by a month or two…”

With close family and friends looking on, Dan presented the returned serviceman with his new medals and certificate.

"There has been a lot of really good support at this RSL over the years," Mike noted.

"I'm lucky to have been involved with some wonderful people."

In true celebratory style the PC-21 passed overhead to the roar of the crowd at the announcement.

“I would like to give special thanks to Kymme Kenna, now our Vice President, for spending endless amounts of research and time to gather all the information required for the application of this award," Dan added.

“I would also like to thank David Weekes and Karen Veal, and everyone else that gave such great references for the application.

“I am honoured to present this much deserved award to such a great man.”
