Nathan and Trev prepare for the 2025 Mystery Box rally in Broken Hill

2 min read

LOCAL Volkswagen Beetle enthusiasts Nathan Leversha and Trevor Heawood are preparing to compete in the gruelling five-day Mystery Box rally starting from Broken Hill.

Raising funds for cancer research the 2025 Mystery Box rally will start on August 15.

Departing Broken Hill for a five-day rally on an unknown route in the remote outback of New South Wales the teams will finally end up back at Broken Hill on the last day.

The details of each day’s rally route will be kept under wraps and only given to the teams just before they start out each morning.

Nathan and Trev are happy to be taking part in their first Mystery Box rally which has become one of the largest community led fundraising events in Australia.

Over the last 12 years Mystery Box rallies have raised $8 million for cancer research.

“This rally will have us driving a 60-year-old car along outback roads we’ve never seen before,” said Nathan.

“We will do approximately 2,500kms over 5 days setting off from Broken Hill and eventually returning back to Broken Hill.

“We have no idea where we’ll be headed until just before we leave each morning.”

Nathan and Trev have a target of $10,000 for the trip and have already raised $5,000.

“Every dollar goes to the Cancer Council,” said Trevor.

Mystery Box rallies are for those who want to have fun, love adventure, crave something different and want to make new life-long friends.

The rally will be different for each team but most importantly it’s for those who want to raise much needed money for cancer research.

Box Rallies highlight the importance of cancer research and how it is funded, putting a spotlight on the researchers themselves.

Nathan and Trev and their VW Beetle ‘Skille’ are generously supported by Gavin Coyne of Autopro in Wonthaggi.

“We are proud to support Nathan and Trev with parts and accessories,” said Gavin.

It’s been a long list of parts and accessories including engine oil, fuel hoses and a much needed light bar to supplement the original 1965 VW headlights.

A rally veteran ‘Skille’ was driven in the Variety Bashes over 20 years ago and now has a new lease of life.

“What could go wrong,” said Trevor

“Everything,” according to Nathan.

Autopro supports the vintage and classic car community with an informal meeting of motoring enthusiasts on the first Sunday of each month in Wonthaggi.
