No multi-level car park in the near future for Bass Coast

1 min read

A MULTI-level car park is one option you won’t find in this month’s Integrated Transport Strategy (ITS) released by Bass Coast Shire Council.

The transport strategy sets out a 20-year vision to create a safer, more accessible and sustainable transport network across the region.

Cr Ron Bauer described the ITS as futuristic.

“Car parking is a problem here and now.

“I’m looking forward to the day we can push a button on the dash of a car, and it folds into a briefcase, and we can put the car in a cupboard,” Cr Bauer said.

Deputy Mayor Cr Brett Tessari said we needed to start thinking differently.

“The right of a Wonthaggi person to park dead in front of the shop they want to go into, even if it means they’ve got to drive around the block five, six, seven times.”

Despite a parking space being available near a supermarket Cr Tessari said he did three laps around a local supermarket recently and kept going until he found a space nearby.

“We can’t get more parking in the main street until we start going to multi-level carparks, and if that means walking down to the shop then that’s what we have to do.”

Cr Tim O’Brien said he was onboard with the ITS.

“The use of cars will continue to grow unless we provide different ways of accessing the town centres, even if it means taking roads away from cars,” said Cr O’Brien.
