Nurturing hearts and minds at Newhaven College

AT Newhaven College, student wellbeing is at the heart of the school’s culture. The College is committed to holistic pastoral care, offering a range of support systems designed to nurture each student’s emotional, social and academic development.

From enrichment programs to leadership opportunities, every student is encouraged to grow in confidence and character. The College’s vertical House structure plays a key role in fostering strong relationships and a deep sense of belonging across year levels. Students are supported daily by dedicated House Leaders and Mentors, who guide and connect with them in meaningful ways. Each morning begins with Home Group, where students from different year levels come together to reflect, collaborate and focus on areas such as wellbeing, academic goals and community spirit.

New to Phillip Island, before sending her children to the College, parent Kyoko Blondel has built strong connections within the College community. “The staff are caring and passionate, taking the time to truly know each student and support their unique strengths and interests. There’s a genuine sense of community here, and the values of respect, curiosity, and kindness are lived every day, not just spoken about,” she says.

Newhaven’s size is another advantage. Smaller than many schools, it offers a more personal environment where students are known and supported as individuals. This attentiveness enables students to flourish, both personally and academically, as they’re encouraged and challenged in ways that suit their unique strengths.

Pastoral care at Newhaven encompasses more than welfare and behaviour management - it is about caring for the whole person. Respect and trust between students and staff are foundational values, and this philosophy is evident across all year levels. In the Junior School, class teachers are the primary providers of pastoral care. As students move into the Middle and Senior Schools, their pastoral journey continues through the College’s House system.

Support also extends through specialised services. The College Chaplain plays a vital role in promoting the emotional, social, and spiritual well-being of students, staff, and families. Working alongside the wellbeing and allied health teams, the Chaplain contributes to a comprehensive support network.

The Counselling Team at Newhaven includes professional psychologists and social workers who are available to all students. Whether seeking a one-time conversation or ongoing guidance, students are welcomed with compassion and care. The goal is always to promote positive mental health and to help students navigate challenges with resilience and self-awareness.

At Newhaven College, wellbeing is not an add-on - it is embedded in every part of the school experience. It is a place where students are safe, supported, and truly able to become their best selves.

Mother of three students at the College, Pharrah Underwood says, “We’ve had such a positive experience with Newhaven College. The school provides a nurturing and inclusive environment where our children feel supported, challenged, and genuinely excited to learn each day.”

Newhaven College has regular College Tours throughout the year, but private tours can also be arranged by contacting the Admissions Team on 5056 7505 or admissions@newhavencol.vic.edu.au
