Police appeal for help after axes drawn in Wonthaggi carjacking

DETECTIVES from the Bass Coast Crime Investigation Unit are investigating a carjacking and related damage to a passerby’s vehicle, which occurred in Wonthaggi Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

Police have been told that at a time between about 9pm and 9.15pm, multiple offenders, armed with what were believed to axes, have assaulted a 33-year-old male from North Wonthaggi and stole a 2024 grey Kia Cerato sedan.

It is believed that the incident commenced in Watt Street near the intersection of Durham Lane, and then escalated in the area of McKenzie Street, between the intersections of Watt Street and Baillieu Street East.

The incident has been reported on the Bass Coast Police Area Eyewatch page on Facebook.

“A vehicle, which was driven by a good-natured person who stopped to assist the victim, had several windows broken by the offenders,” said police.

“It is believed that the victim of the carjacking and offenders may have been known to each other. The vehicle has since been found,” they said.
