Stop and look twice this November

WITH students on the move across Bass Coast, police are sharpening their focus on school-zone safety as part of Operation Pedester, led by Acting Sergeant Zane Maligeorgos.

“We’ve seen an 84 per cent rise in pedestrian incidents in the past 12 months, with 15 of 35 collisions causing serious injuries,” Act Sgt Maligeorgos said.

“When vulnerable road users are involved, the stakes are high. Children, in particular, have little protection in a crash.”

The operation is targeting known high-risk spaces in the month-long operation, especially around schools, crossings and busy pick-up zones. Police want motorists to slow down, put the phone away and actively look for children who may step out unexpectedly.

Students and parents are also urged to play their part by using crossings, obeying signals and avoiding distractions such as phones or earphones.

“Even at 30km/h, the risk of serious injury jumps significantly,” Act Sgt Maligeorgos said.

Throughout November, police patrols will be visible across school precincts, talking to drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to boost awareness as well as enforce the rules.

“It’s up to everyone to share the roads safely,” Act Sgt Maligeorgos concluded.
