THIS year’s Mystery Box Rally kicked off in Broken Hill, with the team, Trevor Heawood and Nathan Leversha, taking on the outback in a classic 1965 Volkswagen Beetle. Their goal was to raise money for the Cancer Council, supporting vital research into treatment and, hopefully, a cure.
As always, each day’s destination was a mystery. Here’s how the adventure unfolded: On day one, it was Broken Hill to Arkaroola (Gammon Ranges National Park).
“We set off into the heart of the outback, arriving in Arkaroola, known for its stunning dark skies. It was a spectacular night of stargazing under a blanket of stars,” said Nathan.
Day two was Arkaroola to Roxby Downs (via Marree).
“We hit the legendary Oodnadatta Track, tackling some of the roughest roads of the rally. Despite the challenging terrain, the Beetle powered through, proving its grit.”
It was then Roxby Downs to Rawnsley Park Station, driving through the majestic Flinders Ranges.
“We were treated to one of the most scenic drives of the rally. The ridge-top track offered breathtaking panoramic views we’ll never forget.” Nathan said.
On day four, the team drove Rawnsley Park to Burra and wound their way through the ranges, crossing dry riverbeds and taking in more incredible outback scenery.
“That night, Burra turned on the chill – literally. Nathan woke to find his swag covered in ice!
“Thankfully, massive thanks go to Wonthaggi Aussie Disposals, who donated top-notch sleeping bags. We didn’t feel the cold one bit – something many others had to contend with,” said Trevor.
“Then on day five, we drove Burra to Broken Hill – the finish line, and we rolled back into Broken Hill, completing the journey with smiles, stories, and a huge sense of accomplishment.”
Over 2000 kilometres of rough, remote outback roads – and they only had one puncture!
“Our Beetle performed flawlessly, thanks to the incredible support from Wonthaggi AutoPro, for providing spare parts and gear during preparation and Mark Robertson, for your expertise and commitment to getting the car rally ready.
“Most importantly, thank you to everyone who donated. Together, this year’s Mystery Box Rally raised over $1.2 million for the Cancer Council. We’re proud to have been a small part of something so meaningful. Until next time.”
