Toes tapping from the opening bars of Lyric’s Footloose

IT’S a ‘boy meets girl’ musical of the highest order so Leongatha Lyric Theatre’s latest musical production had all the ingredients to please when it opened on Friday night this week.

And the sellout crowd came out singing, not only hit songs like ‘Let's Hear It for the Boy’, ‘Almost Paradise’, ‘Dancing in the Streets, ‘Holding Out for a Hero’, and the title track ‘Footloose’ but also the praises of the cast and crew.

What a show! What a colourful, up-tempo production to bring to the local community when, frankly, we could do with a lift.

So, what’s it all about?

Moving in from Chicago to a backwoods, Mid-Western town, newcomer Ren McCormack is in shock when he discovers the place he now calls home has made dancing and rock music illegal.

It’s a measure to keep young people in their place, out of sight and out of mind.

As he struggles to fit in, Ren faces an uphill battle to change things. With the help of his new friend, Willard Hewitt, and defiant teen Ariel Moore, he might just be able to loosen up this conservative town.

But Ariel's influential father, Reverend Shaw Moore, not to mention her red-neck boyfriend have other ideas. Guess what, spoiler alert, it all works out well in the end with some modern-day lessons we could all learn about listening to young people.

With too many great performances and great scenes to mention, the best we can say at this stage is “do yourself a favour” and get a ticket.

Word is that there may still be tickets on the door too for tonight's show so get down to the Memorial Hall and try your luck. It's not too late.
