Over seventy years of breeding

1 min read

THE Meikle family opened their farm on Sunday afternoon to share their Tarwin Poll Herefords herd with Gippsland producers. The annual occasion allows David and Ann to interact with local farmers and share the story behind their seventy years of breeding.

Tarwin Poll Herefords was established in 1950 by the Meikle family after David’s parents moved to the Meeniyan farm in 1926; today the South Gippsland property is home to the fifth generation.

David explained that beef week isn’t purely about retailing but an opportunity to meet new people, build relationships with clients and interact with new buyers. “I find the open days valuable; we’re given more time to chat - discuss what is needed on their end and to also receive feedback – which keeps me on track.”

“On days like today I simply bring all the bull calves down from the gully where visitors can walk through and see what we will have available for the following year,” said David.

Tarwin Poll Herefords is also a part of the Gippsland Performance Herefords group who annually run a September online auction.  “These open days are a great opportunity for buyers to make note of numbers for sales at a later date and for us to have a good conversation about breeding programs - it’s a two-way flow of information.”
