Bass Coast basketballers qualify for state final

BASS Coast College’s senior girls’ basketball team is set to compete in the state finals on September 18.

The team qualified for the state-level contest after celebrating three straight wins at the Gippsland Region Finals in Traralgon on August 14.

The girls played against Maffra, Bairnsdale and Lowanna on the day.

Lowanna was the only other team going into the final game undefeated and the girls anticipated a close contest.

However, Bass Coast College was able to gain a big early lead, which it was able to maintain to take home the win.

“It was one of those games where we beat them with our teamwork. Their team relied on two or three individuals to do all their work and scoring, whereas our side could rely on everybody scoring and doing a good job on the court,” student engagement principal Ross Bramley said.

“It’s a rare opportunity to make a state final, and it is an amazing achievement by our team.”

The girls said the secret to their success was working as a cohesive group, whilst still having plenty of fun along the way.

“Something that’s really good about our team is we aren’t all serious and in our heads when we play. We have a bit of fun and we really encourage each other. It works well for us,” Ally Morris said.

The team will be competing in the state final at Parkville on September 18.

For a few of the teammates, this will be their second attempt at the state title, and they are going into the competition with a winning attitude, ready to face the challenge ahead.
