Elite experience for two local swimmers

1 min read

THE dream of swimming at the Australian World Championship trials became a reality for two South Gippsland Bass swimmers as Miah Roberts and Mostyn Lumsden took to the pool in Adelaide last week.

Miah, who swam in the 50-metre backstroke, loved racing at the event.

“It was an amazing feeling being able to compete in the same pool against my idols, especially Kaylee McKeown,” she said.

“Experiences like this are important steps for me to become a strong swimmer – the more race practise I get in a 50-metre pool at an elite level, the better my swimming becomes.”

Miah was proud of her swim, which had the added pressure with the disqualification of Kaylee, adding some nervous tension to the atmosphere, but she made a fantastic effort, swimming a great time.

“I am thankful to my coach Dylan who couldn’t be there, but took the time to talk to me on the phone, and the coaches from Propulsion who assisted me in my warm-up,” she said.

Mostyn swam in the 50-metre butterfly.

He was joined in the stands by his brother Kai who was there as coach and support team.

“I really loved the atmosphere, and it’s really got me motivated to train hard and get back there next year. After many years of training and racing, I was proud that it has paid off,” Mostyn said.

“Kyle Chalmers jumped in my lane for warm-up and I was so excited to see him swimming so close by. He was amazing to watch. It was great having my brother by my side coaching me..
