ON SATURDAY, August 3, Leongatha Knights Football Club took over Leongatha Memorial Hall for their 20th year celebrations and it was a magnificent affair! With local band Toolshed playing and games for the kids running at the back of the hall there was a lot of laughter and dancing to be had as attendees enjoyed a trip down memory lane.

Foundation members Melina Bath and Gerry Marvin spoke about their fond memories of setting up the club and current president Lorcan Heneghan spoke of the growth and success the club has experienced over its first 20 years.

The club took the opportunity to present the Don Morris “Best Club Person” award with many past recipients and Don’s wife Pam in attendance. The award was presented to longtime coach Peter Milkins in recognition of his continued commitment to developing women’s soccer at the club. Peter has long been an icon at the Leongatha Knights with his dad jokes and tubs of chocolate and lollies, he also fosters a warm and welcoming environment for women of all ages to enjoy sport.

The club also took the opportunity to present a life membership to Senior Men’s coach Bethany Milkins in recognition of 10 years of service to the club. Beth was humbled by the award and thanked the club for all their support over the years.

Leongatha Knights FC would like to thank club secretary Mandy Bongers for all her efforts putting together the event, band Toolshed for a fantastic night of music and Brent Sinclair for a brilliant celebratory cake. The club looks forward to another 20 years of fun and laughter on and off the pitch.

Top of the table clash between LKFC and Phillip Island Breakers

Leongatha loss 1-2

IT WAS a top-of-the-table clash in the GSL Senior Women’s Competition last Sunday at Newhaven Reserve.

Consistent ladder leaders Leongatha Knights took on Phillip Island Breakers at their home ground and put on a spectacular display of local women’s soccer.

The Breakers came out strong, putting the Knight’s defence under pressure from the start. However, the experience and composure in the Knight’s backline ensured no chances were able to break through.

It was a brilliant header and pass play that saw Leongatha striker Rachel run into a 1v1 with the Island keeper and send one confidently into the back of the net securing the lead for the Knights into halftime.

It was a beautiful curling shot from an Island attacker at the start of the second half that brought the team’s level. The game kicked up a notch as both teams battled for the advantage. Though

Leongatha’s defence pulled off some wonderful saves it was a magnificent free kick from Island’s Jess Tong that found the top right corner of the net to secure Phillip Island’s win and Leongatha’s second loss in two seasons.
