Round 14 of the Gippsland Soccer League saw top of the senior women’s ladder Phillip Island Breakers face off against number two on the ladder, Leongatha Knights FC with the Knights having the home ground advantage.
Whilst the visiting Breakers started strong with a high press they were staunchly denied by
Leongatha’s impeccable backline led by centre backs Mandy Bongers and Val Langlet. Despite several creative attacking attempts, Phillip Island were unable to find the back of the net. It was a quick breakthrough pass that ended in a 1v1 with the keeper that saw the Island take the lead followed shortly after by another 1v1 goal sending the Breakers to halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
Not to be deterred, the Knights returned to the pitch in the second half with renewed vigour and pressed forward to create dominant play in their attacking half led by some impressive strength on the ball from midfielders Naomi Eaton, Bernie Fitzgerald and Lisse Bath. It was a corner from Bath that the Island struggled to clear which was capitalised on by Eaton who sent the ball home to get one on the scoresheet for the Knights. Despite strong attacking play throughout the second half the Knights were unable to secure the equaliser but put on a spectacular game of local women’s soccer.
