Knights enjoy success after return to action

FOLLOWING the King’s Birthday weekend bye, Leongatha Knights Football Club returned to the pitch to face Wonthaggi SC.

U17s: Leongatha Knights Blue v Wonthaggi

The U17s game between Leongatha Knights Blue team and Wonthaggi was a tension-filled battle as both teams alternated taking advantage of play.

A long shot from outside the box saw Wonthaggi notch the first goal.

However, Leongatha’s defensive strength in Brandyn, Trent and Ana worked hard to ensure they didn’t concede again.

Returning goalkeeper Bristo pulled off a magnificent double save following a heart-stopping flurry in the box.

The scores were even heading into halftime after a goal to Leongatha from Patch Wilson.

A handball in the box during the second half saw Wonthaggi take the lead once more.

There was another goal from Wonthaggi and one from Leongatha’s Patrick Wilson, saw the scoreline during the last minutes of the game at 3-2, Wonthaggi’s way.

It was the persistence of Leongatha’s right wing Daniel who pressured the Wonthaggi keeper, causing the ball to ricochet off Daniel’s back and into the net resulting in a well-deserved draw.

Women’s: Leongatha Knights v Wonthaggi

The Leongatha Knights were back to fine form this week as they travelled to Wonthaggi for a game under some beautiful winter sun.

Despite struggling for numbers, Wonthaggi put up a strong defence with Aaliyah Trevethan clearing the Knights’ through balls with relative ease.

This forced the Lady Knights to focus on combination play in the final third to set up some beautiful one touch finishes.

The link-up between Lisse Bath (who scored an impressive five goals across the match) and left winger Naomi Eaton (scoring four of her own) was wonderful to watch.

Composed defensive play by Molly Gurnett, Mandy Bongers and Jess Burrows ensured Wonthaggi’s chances were limited, with goalkeeper Kate Membrey’s steady hands cleaning anything up.
