ON SUNDAY, July 27, Leongatha Knights FC hosted Inverloch SC for the second annual Pride Cup. Due to substantial overnight rain, some pitch shuffling was required before the day kicked off with smiles and rainbows. Players and supporters arrived donned in their rainbow-inspired attire, prepared to celebrate inclusivity in sport.
Prior to the first senior game kick-off, players circled up below the Pride Cup banner to acknowledge the importance of the round and affirm each club’s commitment to fostering a culture of inclusion.
The Leongatha Knights Women’s players wore rainbow shoelaces generously sponsored by P & J Milkins Building Design, and the Inverloch Stars Women’s team wore rainbow socks. What followed was an exciting match between the Knights and the Stars.
The game began with a strong tempo as the Knights looked to take advantage of the home ground and a full team. Despite the Stars’ dominant defence, a few early goals saw the Knights with a two-goal lead at half-time. The Stars returned to the pitch determined to get on the team sheet, making for an exciting half of local football. The Knights and Stars both scored two goals apiece to finish the game with a 4-2 win for the Knights.
A big thank you to Leongatha Knight’s Pride Sub Committee for their efforts in putting the memorable day together and to Headspace Wonthaggi for their support on the day.
