Mini Roo action at Trafalgar

THERE were no Hub games this week as the Mini Roos from both divisions headed to Trafalgar for the Gippsland Soccer League Mini Roo Gala Day.

The U-10s were well-represented at Trafalgar this weekend with nine stellar players making the Gala Day trek! Portia, Amity, Daniel, Norman, Tate, River, Hannah, Molly, and Vera played teams from Leongatha, Korumburra and Drouin. As we’ve seen in the weeks prior, these players are a thrill to watch. We saw some truly awesome plays, and the confidence and skill of each player continues to build with each game.

Amity scored a beautiful first goal, and Vera had more near-goals than we’ve ever seen – she was on fire! We loved seeing Molly have a crack at goalie – what a star!

A depleted Wonthaggi United Under 12 team took the field on Sunday against Korumburra.

With the wind blowing players had to concentrate on keeping the play low. Against the wind a brilliant throw from the Jedda gave Hayden the perfect ball to secure Wonthaggi’s first.
Aurora was a brick wall in goals, using her strength to stop Korumburra’s attack.

Eli showed great control and combined with Zoe and Ollie Wonthaggi was able to keep the momentum in the Wonthaggi half. Hayden once again took an outside shot to give Wonthaggi a handy 2-0 lead.

Korumburra, not to be outdone managed to sneak a goal, taking the score to 2-1 at the halftime break. Wonthaggi’s amazing cheer squad had half time covered and even though they had no subs, the team looked ready to go as the second half started. George and Lewey kept pushing forward, but it was Hayden who used the wind to perfectly place the ball over the keeper and into the net 3 more times giving Wonthaggi a convincing lead.

Jaxon had the midfield covered, with his brilliant passing giving Wonthaggi more opportunities. Korumburra managed a second goal to see the scores at 5-2 when the final whistle blew.

Wonthaggi started strong in the U14s and against the wind Judah found the net early giving Wonthaggi the lead. Wonthaggi had all the play, but the Korumburra defense line was very strong.
Some brilliant through balls found their mark and Korumburra had a 2-1 at the half time break.

The clock seemed to be running out for a Wonthaggi comeback as Korumburra seemed to have the edge, but confident control from Jack the Wonthaggi keeper kept the ball being fed forward for Wonthaggi.

Using the wind Judah once again found the net and the equalizer, giving Wonthaggi some hope and a bit of fire for the last 15.

Conner shifted things around, moving Tony into the forward position, this was enough, and he scored a brilliant outside shot, surprising the Korumburra defense. Jo, Hayden, Ollie and Aurora had to hold the defense, Korumburra continually applied the pressure.

Zoe, Brodie and Archie kept the ball moving but it was Veronica who secured the victory for Wonthaggi. Wonthaggi celebrated a brilliant finish and a 4-2 victory.

Wonthaggi had another reason to celebrate on Sunday as the Club commemorative Tony Bals 50th Junior Club game.

Tony began playing for Wonthaggi in 2015 in the Under 7s and played his first Junior competitive game in Round 16 2018 against Leongatha.

He was part of the victorious Grand Final U12s team in 2019. Tony has also represented Gippsland in the Country Championships. Strong in defense Tony’s ability to control the ball also makes him dangerous up forward. The Club is proud to have him take the field each week for Wonthaggi and hopes he continues with the Club for many years to come.
