THE Poowong & District Amateur Basketball Association will be holding a junior and adult Skills Development Day on Saturday, July 19, with elite basketball coach Riley Parkinson.
Riley is the owner and founder of ParkoBall Training and has just opened his own training facility called Next Level Hoops.
He has an engaging coaching style and helps all players build on current skill sets, from mastering the basics to refining more advanced techniques; and is experienced in teaching beginners right through to MBA prospects.
The skills development sessions will be separated into two junior age groups for 7- to 11-year-olds, and 12- to 16-year-olds, with sessions going for 2.5 hours each.
There will also be an adult session that will go for an hour.
“We are trying to promote junior development. We find a lot of kids they come and they play basketball through our junior domestic teams and obviously, our coaches are all volunteers, so it doesn’t really leave a lot of time for out-of-competition training – unless they’re on tournament teams,” explained Sarah Jackson, Registrations Officer for the Poowong & District Amateur Basketball Association (PDABA).
“So, it’s really just giving the kids an opportunity to come along and learn some new basketball skills, which then might strengthen and give them more confidence in the game.”
PDABA’s next basketball season begins on August 11 and runs for twelve weeks, not including holidays, and registrations are now open for the season.
The club are always looking for new players, including girls – and would like to get a girl’s team up and running again, and more teenagers to create a stronger domestic competition.
An under-11 mixed team began last season, which they’d like to continue, as well as the non-competitive under-nines program which will run again.
Max Cody, a former US College basketballer is also available to give private basketball lessons during the off-season.
“As a mum of a nine-year-old, I found it really hard to find a coach at a stadium that I could hire out at the same time, and Poowong has been really great for that. We have a great stadium and it’s minimal cost and Max has jumped on board to give the kids some off-season lessons,” said Sarah.
The cost for the Skills Development Day is $40, and as a bonus, participants will receive $30 off their junior domestic registration for the upcoming season.
