KORUMBURRA-Bena threatened third-placed Cora Lynn on Saturday, with the Cobras narrowly hanging on to a six-point win.
Playing at the Cora Lynn Recreation Reserve, the Giants exhibited excellent ball pressure, allowing the team to get the ball to the ground and send it into the forward line.
The Giants held a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter, and the scores levelled at half time.
Korumburra-Bena’s fluent ball movement and use of the wind were a strength throughout the first half.
Bailey Nation kicked a great goal from 50, which slowly bounced through an undefended goal during the second half.
Tyler Newton was a great asset in the back line, getting lots of intercepts.
Excellent defence all game nearly won the game for the Giants.
Cora Lynn kicked a goal and to put it in front by 12 points.
The Giants then kicked one to take it back to six.
With the Giants in possession of the ball, the siren went.
Unfortunately for the Giants, this resulted in yet another loss, but definitely not one to be disappointed about.
For the young team, everyone including coach Josh Hopkins was very impressed with their fight and effort that they put up against a strong, finals contesting team.
The Giants’ last encounter with the Cobras resulted in a 99-point loss, which indicates their huge improvements and hard work that happens on and off the field.
Korumburra-Bena’s best players were Evan Allaway, Newton, Tom Crocker, Hopkins, Nation and Matthew Borschman,
The Giants will be coming up against Tooradin Dalmore next week.
Tooradin Dalmore is currently sitting second on the ladder, so will be another tough contest for the Giants.
However, they will be coming off the momentum of this week’s exciting result and will be hungry to go one better, so will be hopeful for an interesting outcome.
