SUNDAY morning had turned into a glorious one, with the sun warming everyone’s spirits.
The parents sat in anticipation as the U12s took the field, confident in their ability.
The whistle blew and the intense game began.
Drouin was awarded a free kick, which resulted in the first goal of the match, but Wonthaggi didn’t let their heads drop.
Sam kept up the pace in attack and Fraser, their quick-footed midfielder, fired up the team.
Just before halftime, he danced through two defenders and slotted the ball low into the corner.
Wyatt and Jordan, Wonthaggi’s powerhouse defence keeping Drouin at bay, along with keeper Harvey saving the ball from the net multiple times.
After the break, it was all about Blake.
In what felt like a blur, the powerful forward scored twice in quick succession – once with a booming shot from the edge of the box, and then again after breaking past the defence with a clever run.
It was three to one to Wonthaggi.
Drouin wasn’t finished, and struck again, sneaking a goal past the keeper to make it three to two.
Tension filled the field.
Sunny, Billy, Leo and Oscar powered through, attacking with their strength.
Then came Marwan – calm, focused, and fierce.
He charged forward and chipped the keeper from a distance.
The crowd went wild and the score as four to two.
The whistle blew.
Wonthaggi Wolves had done it.
They stood their ground, showed their strength, and proved that even Drouin couldn’t ruffle their feathers.
While the U12B team headed to Drouin, the majority of the Wonthaggi junior teams were in Lang Lang.
It was another trip away, another strong result for the
Wonthaggi U14s team and another major milestone for one of its players.
The U14s team celebrated 50 club games for Ollie Phillips.
Ollie started at the Club as a little U6 MiniRoo and has grown into a strong defensive player, but that’s not his only talent. Ollie’s family are a huge part of the Wonthaggi United Soccer Club and following his family’s lead, Ollie regularly volunteers as a coach and referee.
Ollie will also be representing Gippsland in the Country Championships in June.
On the other side of Gippsland the Wonthaggi U17 team had a tough battle against Leongatha and unfortunately didn’t get the result they were chasing.
However, Jack Harvey also celebrated his 50th junior club game.
Jack and his family have also been a huge part of the Wonthaggi United Club, with his father Dean currently coaching the Wonthaggi U14s team.
