LOCALS are encouraged to host a morning tea and make a cuppa for a cancer-free future this May and June, and to Celebrate the 30th birthday of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea (ABMT).
Since 1993, passionate people around the country have raised more than $200 million for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, enabling Cancer Council to continue their vital mission of a cancer-free future.
Linda Jefferis, a Korumburra local, has been a passionate ABMT fundraiser for 13 years now and has seen her morning tea grow with each passing year.
“When my son was only one, I was at home a lot and I thought I should do more, I wanted to do more than just be a stay at home. So, I just sort of started as a small gathering in the house. And now it’s quite large and it’s in a shed and is about 80 people.”
Linda has been touched by cancer from an early age and throughout her life.
“My cousin passed away when he was 12 from a brain tumour. I was only very young at the time, but since then, so many more people have passed away with it. It’s not nice.”
This year, Linda raised a grand total of $6612 from her morning tea and will be adding all proceeds from her May sales from her stall in the Korumburra Makers and Collectors Market.
Linda was grateful for the generosity of local businesses who donated to the event.
The hamper raffle was won by Dot West, second prize went to Tricia Smith and third went to Barbara Hosking.
Linda was also grateful for the extra helping hands.
“Big thanks to my Mum and Dad for helping as well as my Aunties Ann and Margy also my husband Brian for all his help and support.”
Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is officially held on Thursday, May 25, however, people can register to host any time throughout May or June.
