Array of activities raising money for Red Shield Appeal

2 min read

LOCAL performers will band together for an afternoon of music to help raise money for the Leongatha Salvos and the Red Shield Appeal, which supports local families in need.

This Saturday the South Gippsland Shire Brass Band will join forces with the Warragul Municipal Band and the Wonthaggi Citizens, Youth and Training bands will all perform pieces along with songs from singing group Serenity.

“We’re just looking at different ways to raise funds,” said Amanda ‘Suri’ Hart, Corps Officer, South Coast Gippsland Salvos, who has organised an array of events and activities to reach their target of $14,000.

“We’re seeing a lot of new people coming in for assistance.”

“In the last month or so, at least, we’ve probably seen double the amount of people coming in to what we usually have,” explained Amanda.

“So, you can just see the pinch and the cost of living, it’s just really starting to have an impact on people, and they’re having to put aside their pride and ask for help, and it’s a really tough thing for a lot of people to do. So, we’re doing what we can to try and raise money to keep our programs running to be able to support people.”

There are also limited offer red shield soaps available, with the mold being donated by a company called Hawthorne Bay from Bendigo and local business Kricklewood Soaps making the bars from all natural ingredients with a lemon myrtle scent.

They’re $5 each, or $20 for five.

Following on from the success of the sale of kokedama plants for the Red Shield Appeal last year, there is demand for a hands-on kokedama workshop, and one will be held on Thursday, May 29 from 7pm – 8.30pm.

Participants will learn how to create and care for a kokedama and all materials and tools will be included with two kokedama plants to take home at the end of what will be a fun and creative night out with others in the community.

Tickets are $65. Register at: forms.office.com/r/V0MsyPeXev.

Salvos staff and volunteers will also be collecting donations at the local supermarkets and at the Leongatha Long Street intersection over the weekend.

The annual Salvos Sleepout will be held on Saturday, May 31 and a Market will be held on Saturday, June 21.

Leongatha Salvos are also holding a Business Challenge where they’re asking businesses to get on board and organise a fundraiser which will be running until Saturday, June 14.

Hartley Wells (Betta) have donated a 32 inch TV which will be a prize for the business that raises the most money.

For more information on any of these activities, events or products give the Leongatha Salvos a call on 5667 5200.
