IN a heartfelt tribute to the late Wendy Saphin, Resident Harpist and Composer at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Michael Johnson will host a harp concert fundraiser at the Wonthaggi State Coal Mine on October 18 at 4:30 pm, with part of the proceeds donated to the Oncology Ward at Bass Coast Health.
“The Oncology Wing at Wonthaggi Hospital provides families with cuddle beds to comfort loved ones during difficult times,” said Michael.
“Wendy was on my mailing list for over 40 years and attended many concerts over the years. She wasn’t just a fan but a dear friend.”
Known for her extensive involvement in the local arts, particularly with the Wonthaggi Theatrical Group, she helped craft sets and put together exhibitions to raise money for various charitable causes, including efforts to combat tiger poaching in Thailand.
Michael notes that this concert is not only personal but a community effort. “It’s open to the public, and we want to honour Wendy’s legacy. She always rallied an audience at my shows and dedicated her life to enriching the community.”
The concert will primarily feature music from Michael’s album, A Moment’s Peace, which includes pieces that were Wendy’s favourites, as well as other original compositions inspired by Michael’s experiences at the Botanic Gardens. “Many of these pieces tell stories, like a visit from a swan I befriended during my early mornings there,” he recounted fondly.
“Wendy was also well known in the community for her involvement in Pelican feeding in San Remo, making her a local treasure,” he said. “Her passion and creativity will be remembered not just at this event, but forward into the future.”
The concert promises a beautiful evening filled with music, stories, and a heartfelt connection to Wendy’s memory, allowing attendees to support a meaningful cause while celebrating a life dedicated to community.
