POP-UP events, numerous surveys, focus groups and internal and external stakeholder workshops all played their part in Bass Coast’s Healthy, Safe and Resilient Plan.
A legislative requirement of all local councils the Healthy, Safe and Resilient Bass Coast Plan builds on Bass Coast Council’s previous plan and responds to the region’s emerging challenges of climate change, cost of living pressures and mental health.
The draft plan has five key themes of healthy and active living, safe and inclusive communities, equitable access and social infrastructure, thriving children and young people, and country, connection and climate.
Looking broadly at how disadvantage and inclusion can be strengthened the plan recognises that people living with a disability often face additional barriers.
“Everyone’s health journey is different.”
Access to affordable mental health services, general healthcare and opportunities to stay active, connected and involved in community life were seen as critical.
“Low-cost or no-cost activities such as walking groups, community events, open spaces and recreation all play a vital role in helping people maintain their health, build social connections and manage life’s pressures.”
With an ageing population growing faster than the state average Bass Coast has recognised the need to support people with chronic disease and dementia.
“Access to age-friendly spaces, preventative health care, and inclusive programs are essential for supporting older people to stay active and independent.”
The community wish list for Bass Coast Shire Council was exhaustive.
More free and low-cost outdoor activities like walking groups to stay active, safe and welcoming community spaces that include everyone, confidence-building programs like cooking, mental health support and fitness classes, better paths, lighting and access to make it easier and safer for people to get around, clear and inclusive signage, easier ways to get help by making sure services talk to each other, one central website or app where people can find local activities, services, parks and events, support for access to healthy food and ways to reduce food waste, accessible public transport and more after hours places for people to meet.
Out for public consultation until September 14 the Bass Coast Healthy, Safe and Resilient Plan can be found at engage.basscoast.vic.gov.au/healthy-communities-25
