Newhaven College’s Japanese student exchange- a host family’s perspective

NEWHAVEN College was delighted to host 14 Year 9 students and two teachers from Ibaraki Christian Junior High School, Japan, as part of the ongoing Japanese exchange program.

From Sunday, July 27 to Thursday, August 7, the visit provided a valuable opportunity for cultural exchange, with students from both schools forming deep connections and broadening their global understanding. For Newhaven College students learning Japanese, the experience offered an authentic and enjoyable way to practise their language skills.

During their stay, the Japanese students were welcomed by College homestay families, embracing the chance to experience the Australian way of life firsthand. Outside of school, many ventured out across Phillip Island, Melbourne, and beyond, to experience Australian life.

While reflecting on the experience, mother of three Newhaven College students and host, Pharrah Underwood, spoke fondly of her and her family’s experience. Her reflections were mirrored by other families who kindly welcomed students into their homes.

“Having our Japanese student, Riona, stay with us has been such a rewarding and eye-opening experience for our whole family,” says Pharrah. “We’ve learned so much - not just about Japanese culture, but also about ourselves and how much we can gain by welcoming someone new into our home.

“Riona brought a beautiful sense of calm and presence with her. Through her, we learned about the little details that make Japanese culture so unique - from the rules at school such as not being allowed to whistle or plait their hair, to their deep respect for food and not letting anything go to waste. Mealtimes became a great opportunity for cultural exchange - we introduced her to some of our favourites, and she introduced us to hers. The difference in food portions, ingredients, and snacks sparked so many interesting conversations.

“Riona patiently taught us how to use chopsticks the right way, which the kids were especially excited about. In return, our kids have picked up several Japanese words and phrases and have loved learning how different daily life is for Riona back home.

“The language barrier at times challenged us, but it also taught us to slow down, be patient, and find other ways to connect — through gestures, laughter, and shared moments. It was a valuable reminder that communication is about so much more than just words.

“We feel incredibly lucky to have shared this experience. Hosting Riona has left a lasting impact on our family and given us memories we’ll cherish forever.”

Japanese Exchange Program Coordinator, Mitsuko Horiguchi, was very pleased with this year’s exchange, “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Japanese students and teachers for enriching our lives and contributing to the vibrant tapestry of our school community. Special thanks go to our host families for their warmth and generosity in welcoming these students into their homes.”

Scheduled for September, the exchange program will continue with 15 Year 10 and 11 Newhaven College students visiting Ibaraki School, again staying with host families. All students participating in the program are anticipating an incredible experience.
