The magic of Christmas lights in Wonthaggi

1 min read

HYDE sisters Jessica and Kate Hyde have helped discover the spirit of Christmas in Wonthaggi. What started as a simple online Facebook post has grown into a community Christmas light competition, and they're asking the neighbourhood to join in on the tradition.

It all began in 2017, when Jessica posted the street names of decorated houses to help the community navigate where to travel throughout December. “It never started as a competition; it was a simple way to locate those decorated homes,” said Jessica.

Eight years on, and the Christmas Lights Wonthaggi Official page has become the host of an annual competition with Santa’s Little Helper, Forty Winks and local businesses getting behind the initiative, with three prizes to be won!

“Forty Winks has generously donated a queen-size mattress and pillow with delivery,” said Jessica. “We’re so grateful for the community support, it’s a wonderful way to get everyone in the spirit of Christmas.”

Jessica and Kate have always decorated their family home and they simply found a way to share their passion for Christmas with their neighbourhood. “All you have to do is visit the Christmas Lights Wonthaggi Official page and register your street address, we’ll update the page and you’ll be in the draw to win.”

“I moved out this year, it’s my first time decorating in my own home and I need to buy more decorations,” said Jessica. “It’s such a wonderful time of year, and we simply keep the lights and decorations in storage and accumulate more and more over the years.”

If you’re looking for a list of homes to visit this Christmas, to share in the spirit with family and friends, visit Christmas Lights Wonthaggi Official page and take a drive around town this December, where the community comes together for the magic of Christmas.
