WONTHAGGI’S Courtney Young was the runaway winner of the Gippsland League’s best and fairest award in B Grade netball after the counting of votes last Sunday.
Young got out to an early lead in the count, polling best on court votes (3) in each of the first three rounds before dropping off the pace when she two games, in Rounds 5 and 6, while also failing to attract the umpire’s attention in Rounds 4 and 7, despite being named in the team’s best on the day.
But a run of 2, 3, and 3 votes in Rounds 9, 10, 11 put her back on top, and despite missing games in Rounds 12 and 13, and being named among the best in Round 14, but not scoring votes, she collected best on court votes in each of the remaining four matches for a clear win on 32 votes.
Young collected best on court votes in 10 rounds, and a single two in Round 8.
Several Leongatha players featured in the vote counting, sharing the votes across the year, but with Alicia Marshman finishing league runner-up on 20 votes, a margin of 12 adrift of Young.
Courtney continued her good form into the finals, contributing strongly through the midcourt in Wonthaggi’s 43-50 loss to Traralgon in the Elimination Final at Drouin on Sunday, August 30.
