MDU triumphs in one day against Club

3 min read

AS with other A2 round 12 fixtures, the planned two-day clash between Meeniyan Dumbalk United and visitor Wonthaggi Club was transformed into a one-day match by week one rain, and the Demons proved too strong with the ball to win by 64 runs.
MDU used seven bowlers, with all but one sharing in the wickets.
Sam Bright (3/16), Darien Mathews (2/11) and Scott Browne (2/18) excelled for the winning side, with Wonthaggi’s batting line up never able to settle in the pursuit of a challenging 169-run target.
The wheels fell off for Club after its 20-run opening partnership was broken, with the MDU bowlers then wreaking havoc and reducing Wonthaggi to 6/39.
Club’s skipper Luke McGuirk added respectability to his team’s total making 31, with Drew Herbert’s 19 next best for the beaten side as it scraped into triple figures.
After choosing to bat first, MDU didn’t have it easy, with Browne’s slightly better than a run a ball 55 the main factor in the Demons posting a strong score, and captain Joel Sinclair (26) next best.
Six of Club’s seven bowlers captured at least a wicket each, with Andot Mankhong (2/17) the one to break through more than once.

Foster openers set victory platform against Kilcunda Bass

FOSTER backed its decision to bat first, setting Kilcunda Bass 202 for victory, with the Tigers’ opening partnership of 99 instrumental in the side’s subsequent 79-run win.
Jack Gay starred for Foster, making 89 from 90 balls, striking 16 boundaries on the way.
Fellow opener and captain Josh Toner made 35 with Jake Staley’s impressive late order hitting reaping 39 off just 26 balls.
The latter’s knock proved important after Foster wickets began tumbling once the Tigers’ opening partnership was broken.
Jaydan Tregear was outstanding with the ball for Kilcunda Bass, finishing with 4/31 from his eight overs, including removing both Foster openers.
Jack Weston took it upon himself to ensure Kilcunda Bass never threatened to reach the difficult total needed, with his bowling accounting for the Sharks’ top three, and was also instrumental in the removal of the chasing side’s number four batsman by taking a catch.
Weston finished with 5/38 from his eight overs.
Such was the dominance of the Foster attack that Jackson Baker’s unbeaten 25 was the best anyone could muster for Kilcunda Bass.
Tregear followed up his strong performance with the ball by making 23 when he opened the batting for the Sharks.

Glen Alvie skittles Nyora

AFTER Glen Alvie elected to bat, it was only able to find a couple of significant contributors, the main one being skipper and keeper Lachlan Harris who made 65.
He was well supported by Ben McRae’s 34, batting at number three.
The home team managed to set Nyora a target of 180 runs.
Lincoln Brock took 2/21 off seven tidy overs for Nyora to help prevent Glen Alvie posting a higher total, while Jake Hackett snavelled 3/33 from his six overs.
With Nyora soon reduced to 3/10 after beginning its chase, its target appeared a large mountain to climb and the side was never able to regain its footing.
Glen Alvie’s bowlers seized such a high level of control that Gavin Hackett’s modest score of 20 was the highlight of Nyora’s batting display, with nobody else in the side reaching double figures.
Dean Williams had a day out with the ball for the winning side, claiming three Nyora wickets for just four runs, with Matthew Dakin grabbing 3/14.

Korumburra wrecks Phillip Island in Cowes

KORUMBURRA sent home side Phillip Island in and demolished it, with only Kohen Beaumont (14) and David Womersley (10) able to muster any resistance as the Sharks succumbed for 45.
Steven Hamill was the chief destroyer for the Cobras, taking 3/19, with Jacob Whiteside getting 2/8.
Korumburra’s other three bowlers each took a wicket with that trio conceding less than 10 runs apiece.
Opener Tom Crocker did his bit for the Cobras in the small chase, finishing 19 not out after some recent low scores.
Phillip Island’s bowlers showed spirit to capture the wickets of Harshika Fernando and Peter Edwards cheaply despite the near impossible task of trying to defend such a low total.
Jobe Williams (1/6) and Kurt Lane (1/18) were the successful bowlers for the determined but outclassed Phillip Island.
